Record sales: Is demand growing, or just arriving earlier?

According to Adobe, U.S. online spending reached $9.86 billion on October 6–7, up 8.5% year over year—slightly below its $9.9 billion forecast. This covers U.S. online retail, not Amazon alone.

It is easy to read a record as stronger demand. But the fall event moved from October 10–11 in 2023 to October 6–7 in 2026. The same demand could simply be arriving earlier. That is our hypothesis to test, not Adobe’s conclusion.

The real question is: What does the campaign add to the season? We assess three dimensions:

  • Season: Including the weeks after the campaign, does total revenue exceed what we would expect without it?
  • Incremental demand: Are purchases additional, or brought forward?
  • Profitability: What remains after discounts, advertising, commissions and returns?

Consider a hypothetical brand expecting TRY 10 million in seasonal revenue without a campaign. If an TRY 850,000 campaign-period uplift is offset by TRY 600,000 in lower subsequent sales, incremental revenue is TRY 250,000. At a 20% contribution margin, that means TRY 50,000 before additional advertising costs.

At Sellf, growth engineering means assessing campaign revenue alongside total seasonal profitability and return on investment.
